Frequently Asked Questions

Fractional CHRO

What fractional executive HR leadership is, and whether it fits your business.

Straight answers to the questions CEOs and owners ask most about fractional CHRO services, interim HR leadership, pricing and how engagements with KNS Associates work.

A fractional CHRO is a senior HR executive who leads your HR function on a part-time, ongoing basis. You get the judgment of a chief human resources officer, someone who has owned people strategy at the executive table, without creating a full-time executive position. At KNS Associates that leadership comes from Ken Sensanbaugher, who brings 30+ years of HR leadership including roles at Honeywell and Cummins and service as CHRO at JB Poindexter.

A consultant studies a problem and hands you recommendations. A fractional CHRO takes a seat on your leadership team and owns outcomes. Ken joins your executive conversations, makes people decisions with you, develops your HR team and stays accountable for what happens after the advice is given. It is an ongoing leadership relationship, not a report.

Enough to lead properly, and no more than the business needs. Each engagement is scoped around a regular cadence, on site and remote, that covers leadership team participation, HR oversight and the strategic priorities you have agreed. The cadence is set up front and adjusted as your needs change, which is the whole point of the fractional model.

KNS works with small and medium-sized businesses in the $1M to $500M revenue range. If significant people decisions are being made without senior HR judgment, if HR problems keep reaching the CEO's desk, or if hiring, retention or organizational issues are slowing growth, you are squarely in the range where fractional executive leadership makes sense.

Interim CHRO

Executive coverage when your HR leadership seat is suddenly empty.

When the HR leadership seat is empty and the work cannot wait: a resignation or termination, a leader out on extended leave, a merger or acquisition that needs experienced HR hands, or a growth surge that has outrun the current team. An interim CHRO stabilizes the function immediately and gives you room to make the permanent decision well instead of fast.

Stabilize first. Ken makes sure payroll, benefits, compliance obligations and any live employee issues are being handled, then assesses the HR team and the risks that need attention. You get a candid early briefing on what is solid, what is exposed and what should be fixed before a permanent leader arrives, so the seat is never truly empty.

Yes, and it is one of the most valuable parts of the engagement. Ken helps you define what the role really requires, which is often different from the last job description, assesses candidates with an executive's eye, and onboards the successor for a clean handoff. Some clients also choose to continue with a smaller fractional arrangement after the permanent hire lands.

HR Outsourcing

Where KNS fits alongside PEOs, payroll providers and outsourced HR services.

Not in the usual sense. HR outsourcing typically means handing transactional work, payroll, benefits administration, basic compliance, to an outside vendor. KNS provides the executive leadership layer above that work: strategy, judgment and accountability. Ken can design your outsourcing approach, select the right providers and oversee them, but the value of KNS is Fortune 500 caliber HR leadership, not low-cost processing.

A PEO runs administration. It does not sit with your leadership team, coach your executives, plan succession, design your organization or own your culture and retention. Many KNS clients keep their PEO for transactions while Ken provides the strategic leadership the PEO was never built to deliver. The two arrangements complement each other rather than compete.

Pricing and Engagement Models

How engagements are structured and what determines the investment.

Fractional engagements are priced as a straightforward monthly retainer scaled to the cadence and scope you need. Interim coverage is priced for the intensity of the coverage period. Project work is priced against a defined scope. Exact pricing is confirmed during the consultation, once Ken understands your situation, so the number reflects the work your business actually needs and nothing more.

Four, broadly. Fractional CHRO or CPO leadership on an ongoing retainer. Interim CHRO coverage when the seat is empty. Project-based consulting for defined work such as a compensation redesign, an HR audit or a succession plan. And advisory arrangements for leaders who want experienced counsel on call. Many clients move between models as their needs evolve.

No. Engagements are built around clear terms and a regular review of whether the work is delivering, and they are designed to be re-earned rather than locked in. The goal is a relationship you keep because it is working, not because an agreement makes leaving painful. Scope and terms are agreed in writing before any work begins.

A full-time CHRO carries an executive salary plus bonus, benefits and often equity expectations, and most small and medium-sized businesses do not need that seat filled all week. The fractional model gives you the same caliber of leadership for a portion of that commitment, sized to your actual need. Ken walks through the comparison openly during the consultation.

Industries

Where KNS experience runs deepest, and who the firm serves.

KNS works across energy and oil and gas, healthcare, construction, manufacturing, logistics and transportation, professional services, and startups and private equity backed companies. Ken's background at Honeywell and Cummins built deep experience with industrial, technical and complex workforce environments, which translates directly to the operating businesses that dominate the Houston economy.

No. KNS is based in the Houston area and serves clients nationwide. Engagements combine on-site presence with remote work, in whatever mix the situation calls for. Houston clients typically see more in-person time, while clients elsewhere get the same leadership through a structured remote cadence with travel as needed.

Timelines

How fast engagements start, and how long they run.

Quickly. After the initial consultation and agreement on scope, work can typically begin within days. Interim situations move fastest, because an empty HR leadership seat compounds risk daily. Fractional engagements usually start with an assessment period so the ongoing cadence is built on a real understanding of your business rather than assumptions.

It depends on the model. Interim coverage runs until your permanent leader is hired and onboarded. Project work runs until the defined scope is delivered. Fractional relationships are ongoing by design, reviewed regularly, and continue as long as they are earning their place, with many clients adjusting the cadence up or down as the business changes.

Honestly: clarity comes early, structural change takes longer. In the first weeks you should expect a candid assessment, clear priorities and visible ownership of the issues that have been drifting. Deeper work, succession readiness, compensation redesign, culture change, is measured in months, and Ken will tell you up front which is which. What you will never get is vague activity without a plan.
